Birds & Bees Organic Winery and Meadery

Birds & Bees Organic Winery and Meadery, located 150 km northeast of Edmonton, has been making orchard wines and mead, a honey-based wine, since 2005. They have been selling at farmers’ markets from Lethbridge to Grande Prairie since 2009, and their wines now sell for up to $50 a bottle in high-end restaurants. They produce around nine handcrafted table wines from indigenous plants and fruits, including the world’s only lucerne wine. The wines range from dry to semi-sweet.

The winery is keen on sustainability, and they utilize lighter, eco-friendly wine bottles when packaging their wines to enhance minimum fuel consumption due to less glass. Additionally, they utilize screw caps which are more sustainable and preserve the wine better, leading to less spoilage.

Chinook Arch Meadery

Chinook Arch Meadery was the first honey winery in Alberta. Mead is a non-grape wine and archaic beverage made from fermented honey, fruit, and spices, which Chinook Arch produces in this picturesque, off-the-beaten-path rural location. Chinook, Alberta’s first meadery, experiments with various flavor profiles, such as buckwheat and black currant, which are uniquely available here. The winery also sells fine meads, from traditional styles to melomels featuring local fruits.

Spirit Hills Winery specializes in food-friendly, grapeless wines inspired by Alberta’s indigenous inhabitants. The winery is operated by a Bonjean family, which comes from generations of French winemakers. The winery collects honey and, in perfect harmony with local flower petals and berries, transforms it into the most exclusive and seductive honey wines with a distinct Alberta character and personality. The winery incorporates design influences from Alberta’s pioneering west and the Bonjeans’ European ancestry.
