first visit to the calgary dentist

We’ve all been repeatedly told how important visiting the dentist regularly is for keeping your teeth and gums in a healthy condition. Besides using correct brushing and flossing techniques, regular dental checkups are the best thing you can do for your oral health. But what you might not know is that there is a strong relationship between periodontal disease and heart disease, so taking good care of your mouth is also a big part of taking care of your whole body.

When it comes to the health of your mouth, preventative care is key. Through regular dental checkups, your dentist will be able to catch any potential oral problems that you may not even be aware of such as tooth fillings and cavities to gum disease and oral cancer. Early detection of such issues may save you acute physical and emotional pain as well as help you avoid expensive and extensive treatment down the road.

We encourage our patients to use their regular checkups as an opportunity to consult with us and discuss any changes or ongoing issues since their last visit. Together, we are able to figure out viable, appropriate solutions to these problems and restore their smile to its beautiful, healthy state. So schedule your appointment with our family dentist today!

Visiting the dentist regularly has numerous advantages including:

  • Prevention of gum disease: The buildup of plaque can result in periodontal (gum) disease. By regularly visiting your family dentist, you can keep your teeth free and clean of such bacteria which may also cause gum irritation and inflammation.
  • Maintain good overall health: Recent studies have found compelling evidence to link gum disease to other chronic conditions such as diabetes, pneumonia and heart disease. By visiting the dentist regularly, you could potentially lessen your risk of having a stroke or developing heart disease.
  • Avoid tooth loss: Nobody wants to lose their teeth. Lazy or poor dental hygiene will result in advanced gum disease, which destroys the supporting bone, allows plaque to move into the roots of your teeth and eventually leads to tooth loss. Having your teeth cleaned and checked regularly can dramatically reduce the chances of you losing your teeth as you get older.
  • A brighter, whiter smile: A regular dental clean allows your family dentist to remove any unwanted stains caused by coffee, tea, wine, tobacco and other products, leaving you with a whiter, healthier smile.

During your first and subsequent visits to Macleod Trail Dental, we strive to create a comfortable, relaxing and friendly environment for you. Here are just some of the things you can expect on your first visit to our family dentist.

Step 1 – First Things First

Before we can begin any treatment, you must complete a patient medical form. After this, we will need to take your complete medical and dental history as such factors can have a significant impact on your oral health as well as other health conditions. Digital x-rays will be taken as they are essential for the detection of dental caries, tumors, cysts, seeing the position of the roots and teeth as well as for periodontal considerations such as bone loss.

Step 2 – Clean & Polished

After the x-rays have been taken, one of our friendly, registered dental hygienists will perform a thorough examination of your gums and teeth. They will assess the health of your mouth and the presence of any gum disease. A dental cleaning will include the removal of calculus (hardened plaque) which has formed above and below the gum line and which can’t be removed by simple brushing. During the cleaning, the plaque (the sticky, invisible film which forms over your teeth and can lead to periodontal disease) is also removed. In the last stage of cleaning, your teeth will be polished and all the stains and remaining plaque will be removed, leaving you with a brighter, whiter and healthier smile! At this point, our dental team will also advise you on the best brushing and flossing techniques to maintain your oral health.

Great care will be taken to ensure that there is no or little discomfort during cleaning. If you do experience tooth sensitivity, options for cleaning will be discussed with you. Our qualified hygienists are compassionate and emphatic and we pride ourselves on providing an open, non-judgmental space for all of our clients.

Step 3 – Check-up

After the cleaning, one of our highly trained dentists will complete a thorough dental examination which involves reviewing your x-rays, the hygienists finds and a complete physical exam including an oral cancer screening. The findings will be discussed with you after the check up and if any treatment is required, all your options will be explained and we can help you make the best and most comprehensive decision about your dental health.

Step 4 – Costs

At Macleod Trail Dental we don’t want to spring any surprises on you which is why, after your first visit, we will provide a clear, detailed estimate on the cost of your treatment plan so you know what to expect, This includes the the price quote for recommended treatments and the date for your follow-up appointment. If you have insurance coverage, we will enter it into the computer and at the end of your visit, electronically submit the cost to your insurance company.

We strive to provide a patient-centered, responsive approach for all your dental needs and have created an engaging, comfortable and spa-like environment for our clients. Our mission is to leave a positive impact on the well-being of all of our patients through individualized and affordable treatments based on your specific needs and circumstances.
